Roland VS-880 V-Xpanded -
The Environment for EMAGIC LOGIC/LOGIC AUDIO

The following text uses the abbreviation "E." for the term "environment".

General Hints
Please use the last version of LOGIC.
This E. has been created with version "2.6.6".

For every VS-880 song create an equivalent LOGIC song with the same name
to ensure the highest possible level of compatibility.

If you edit parameters in the VS-880 itself, the equivalent values in the
E. will not be updated.

Check the output ports of the LOGIC instruments "VS-Rec", "Logic->VS" and
"VS->Logic".

"VS-Rec" and "Logic->VS" should be assigned to the VS-880 port, whereas
"VS->Logic" should not be assigned to any port. This helps to prevent
malfunctions and possible system crashes.

VS-880 Settings
Set the VS-880 MIDI parameters "RX SysEx" and "TX SysEx" to ON.
In this mode the VS-880 is capable to receive the E. INIT correctly.

Set the current VS-880 song to "Song Protect=Off", before you start working,
because only in the Non-Protect mode you can control the VS-880 tracks from
LOGIC. If you just need to do a mix, leave the song protected, to prevent
tracks from being accidentally deleted.

Tips for the handling of the E.
Pressing the INIT button will initialize the VS-880, so that it is possible
to sync the VS-880 and LOGIC.
After that select the requested Mix Mode of the VS-880.

Synchronisation
Synchronisation is done via MIDI CLOCK and MMC.
MIDI TIME CODE (MTC) should only be used instead of MIDI CLOCK if the MIDI
interface processes the MTC data correctly. This is the case with most bigger
MIDI IFs. Some smaller MIDI IFs with low MIDI buffer do not process MTC data
correctly and thus do not allow correct synchronisation.

Track selection
If you select one of the tracks 1-8, the corresponding track in the VS-880
will automatically be set to REC status (the track LED is blinking red).
This is possible only, if the song is NOT protected.
SHIFT + Track selection switches back to PLAY status (the track LED lights
green).

The E. can receive data from the VS-880 at any time. This data can be recorded
on any LOGIC track.
To see changes or fades in one of the mixer modes (moving faders), it is
necessary for the "Sequence***", which includes the controller data, to be
set to track ""VS->LOGIC".
Before that select one of the Mix modes of the VS-880.

To see the fader data and transmit these simultaneously, select the track
"LOGIC-> VS". To send the data to the VS-880 without watching the data in the
E. and to record another track simultaneously, move the "Sequence***" with
its controller data onto the track "LOGIC->VS" and select another record
track in LOGIC.

These features allow to record almost any parameter of the VS-880 (except
SysEx data) and enhance the Automix capabilities (Level, Pan, EQ, EFX).

To create precise fades, use LOGIC HYPER DRAW. Select the "VS REC" track in
LOGIC, switch on the Hyper Draw function for the selected sequence and create
a controller envelope.
Refer also to HYPER DRAW in the LOGIC manual.

V-track name
You can name the V-tracks via text fader:
1) Double-click on the text
2) Double-click V-Track number
3) Input text (V-track name)
4) Press RETURN twice to exit
5) Re-select V-track to display the name on the screen.

The preset names are those of the first VS-880 demo song "V-Studio".

Effect section
If you select effects, select in the following order:
- bank (Bank Select for Preset or User group)
- effect program (Program Change)

If you select a new effect program, the different parameter values will not
be updated, which means that the settings in the VS-880 and E. will be
different. To compatibilize the parameter values, proceed as follows:

1) Select the requested parameters one after the other with SHIFT + mouse
click. DO NOT use the function SELECT ALL !

2) Send all selected data via "Send Selected Fader Values".

The settings of the effect block will be transmitted into the VS-880.

The range of the Voice Transformer parameters "Pitch Fine" and "Formant Fine"
are different in the E. ("-63-+63") and the VS-880 ("-100-+100").
This is because of technical reasons.

In the effect menu, just use the buttons, not the text lines. If you change
the value in a text line, the new value will not be transmitted.

Equalizer
If you click "MIX 2x EQ", this value will be selected in the VS-880 system.
If you click "MIX 3x EQ", the following data will be sent:

1) EQ CHANNEL 9-14 = OFF
2) SYSTEM 3x EQ = ON
Refer also to the VS-880 VXpanded manual.

Screen Sets
The different screen sets can be selected via the following shortcut buttons:

ARRANGE WINDOW: 1
INPUT MODE: 2
14 CHANNEL 2x EQ: 3
14 CHANNEL 3x EQ: 4
SYSTEM: 5

REVERB-EFFECT PROGRAM: 59
MIC SIMULATOR: 61
VOICE TRANSFORMER: 65
COMPRESSOR/LIMITER: 63

Data transmission
If you send to many events at the same time, some data may be sent incorrectly
or will not be sent at all.
In this case, send data in logical groups, which means

- all VOLUME data at the same time
- all PAN data at the same time
- etc..

Synchronisation of VS-880 and LOGIC

VS-880
SYSTEM Parameter
System Master Clock : INT
SYSTEM MIDI Parameter
MMC=  SLAVE
SYSTEM SYNC/TEMPO Parameter
Source=   INT
Generate= MIDIclk (MTC, if an SMPTE Reader is available)
MTC Type= 25 (EU) / 30 (USA)

LOGIC
Song Settings
MIDI Options
AUTO SYNC IN (if possible) or MIDI Clock Sync (SMPTE Sync, if an SMPTE Reader
is available)
MIDI Machine Control ON

Logic sends a Start command, which starts the VS-880 (MMC Slave mode). After
starting the VS-880 sends MIDI clock data to synchronize LOGIC.

If the VS-880 sends a Start command, LOGIC will be started, too.

The first eight tracks in LOGIC with the "tape" icon (VS-REC) are the eight
tracks of the VS-880. If you click on one of these tracks the equivalent
track in the VS-880 will automatically be set to RECORD.

With SHIFT + mouse click you can switch between REC and PLAY.

If you click on the VS-880 playback track, all REC-tracks will be switched
to PLAY. To switch more than one track to RECORD, use SHIFT+mouse click.

A maximum of 4 tracks can be set to RECORD.

If you click on REC in LOGIC, the VS-880 starts recording.
If you click on PLAY in LOGIC, the VS-880 starts playing and is in RECORD
STANDBY mode for the selected REC tracks. If LOGIC sends a REC command, the
tracks are switched to RECORD.
Use the SPACE button on the MAC/PC keyboard to toggle between PLAY and REC
(manual PUNCH IN/OUT).

You can also use Logic AUTO PUNCH IN/OUT. If you select a certain position or
a marker position, both LOGIC and the VS-880 will jump slightly before the
newly selected position, so that there is enough time to have both LOGIC and
VS-880 in sync at the requested position.
This does not happen, if you select the song start position.

Important Notes
Roland and P. Kolias are not responsible for malfunctions, which might occur
when using the E. Roland and P. Kolias do not offer any service for the E.
The E. is not meant to be a complete editor for the VS-880.

The specifications of the E. are subject to change without notice.
To handle the E. properly, it is necessary to know the functions of LOGIC and the
Roland VS-880.
